Verdict
The biggest number on our leaderboard and the weakest evidence behind it. Palmer may well be as good as the figure suggests, but two self-reported years carried by one exceptional season is not the same claim as seven proofed ones, and should not be priced as though it were.
The record
Steve Palmer has tipped golf for the Racing Post since 2000 and is the best-known name in the British golf betting market. The figures published for him are +588.44 points from 1,477 staked in 2024 (39.84%) and +148.70 from 1,376 in 2025 (10.81%). Combined, that is 737.14 points from 2,853 staked, or 25.8% - the single highest ROI on our leaderboard.
The arithmetic checks out and both years verify against the source. We have left the number exactly as published. What matters is what kind of number it is.
Racing Post publishes no audited results table for Palmer. These figures appear in the promotional author blurb at the foot of his own tip articles - the publisher's own marketing copy about its own tipster, unproofed by anyone. That is the weakest sourcing on our leaderboard, and it is why he does not lead it despite leading on ROI.
The shape of the record matters as much as its sourcing. 2024 was extraordinary: 39.8% ROI on the back of 19 winners. 2025 came in at 10.81%. On 2025 alone Palmer sits below PGA Profit, below Golf Insider, and below two of our own models. A two-year window carried almost entirely by one outlier season tells you much less about next year than a seven-year proofed run at a lower rate.
None of this is a reason to avoid him. His tips are free, he has tipped for twenty-five years, and reporting suggests he has been profitable in most of them. It is a reason not to treat 25.8% as a rate you should expect to receive.
